Tutorials 9 and 10

Woot! I'm in double digits now! :)

Tutorial 9
We'll go from Tut9Before.png to StephenScroll.png

I started with this cropped and scaled image from a recent photo: Tut9Before.png

Photo posted by fryphile on stephenfrydaily.

01. Sharpen to 50.
02. Use the teardrop tool on blur and the Circle 03 brush to smooth the skin.
03. Duplicate the base, keep at Normal 100%.
04. Delete the original base layer.
05. On the new base layer, delete the entire background, leaving only Stephen's face.
06. Apply this texture 77words_mixedbag_14.png by 77words, move to become base layer, leave at Normal 100%, flip horizontally.
07. I wanted more of the texture's design to show on the right, so I moved Stephen over a few pixels to the left (Layer,
       Transform, Offset
; x value = -12, y value = 0, Edge Behaviour = Make Transparent).
08. Add this texture fullmind_79_textures3_21.jpg made by fullmind_79 between the two exising layers, rotate 90 degrees
clockwise, remove the pink (easiest way is with the Select regions by color tool and then Edit, Clear).
09. New layer, 075be0, set to Overlay 100%; this should be second from the top.
10. Duplicate 075be0 layer, leave at Overlay 100%; this should now be second from the top.
11. Duplicate top layer (Stephen), set to Overlay 100%.
12. Duplicate Overlay layer, set to Screen 100%.
13. New top layer, 9fa4a7, set to Overlay 100%.
14. New top layer, 8fe1ff, set to Burn 60%.
15. New top layer, ffdbb0, set to Burn 30%.
16. Duplicate ffdbb0 layer, set to Multiply 30%.
17. Duplicate the top Stephen layer, move to become top layer, desaturate, set to Soft Light 60%.
18. Apply this texture reve2-03.jpg by reve_lucide as new top layer, set to Dodge 100%.
19. New top layer, white, set to Overlay 40%.

This is my completed layers dialog.

Tutorial 10
We'll go from Tut10Before.jpg to TiesMatter.png

I started with this cropped and scaled image from a Jeeves & Wooster screencap: Tut10Before.jpg. It measures 100 px wide by 79 px high.

01. Start a new file: 100 x 100 pixels, fill with white.
02. Layer the screencap on top of the white base (File, Open as layer).
03. Move the screencap layer so that the top of it aligns with the top of the white base.
04. Sharpen to 55.
05. Duplicate screencap layer, set to Overlay 75%.
06. Duplicate Overlay layer, set to Screen 90%.
07. Apply this texture 77words_mixedbag_34.png by 77words, set to Mulitply 55%.
08. New layer, bafac2, set to Burn 65%.
09. New layer, facd9f, set to Divide 75%.
10. New layer, e8e4fe, set to Overlay 75%.
11. Erase Jeeves and Bertie from the e8e4fe layer.
12. Add this texture fire_icons-texturea30.png by fire_icons, set to Overlay 80%.
13. Optional step: The base has muddied with the various layers. If pure white is preferred (which it was for me) do
       these optional steps.
       a. Duplicate white base.
       b. Select top portion that sits under screencap.
       c. Clear the selection.
       d. Move to become top layer.
14. Text was applied to top layer, Tw Cen MT Condensed, 13 pt., black.
15. Duplicate text layer.
16. Duplicate the text layer again, change color to e8e4fe, move underneath the original text layer, offset one pixel
down and one pixel to the right.
       a. Use Layer, Transform, Offset.
       b. Enter 1 for both X and Y values. (If you enter -1 in both values, the text will offset 1 pixel up and 1 pixel to the left.)
       c. Blur the layer once (Filter, Blur, Blur).

Here is my completed layers dialog. Note that I did the option step (#13), which is the "Background copy" layer fourth from the top.

Comments are appreciated; I love feedback! :D

These were both very fine tutorials! I made several icons, but here are a couple of my favorites:

I'll probably post all of them sometime soon in browncoat_squee and serenityicons. Thank you so much!

Thanks! That's Adam Baldwin, who played Jayne in the tv show Firefly & it's movie offspring Serenity. I'm an unabashed fangirl. I go for Captain Mal, myself, but a friend requested some Jayne icons. :)
