Tutorial 5

From Tut5Before.png to BertieSmoke_1x05.png with The GIMP 2.2.

01. I started with this cropped scaled image from a J&W Screencap: Tut5Before.png
02. Duplicate the base, leave at Normal 100%.
03. Delete the original base.
04. Sharpen to 45.
05. Erase the background of the new base, which will leave you with a transparent background like this: Tut5a.png
06, Duplicate the base, set to Hard Light 100%.
07. New layer, 81cbf2, set to Burn 100%.
08. Duplicate 81cbf2 layer, set to Burn 25%.
09. New layer, acf281, set to Divide 40%.
10. New layer, ffbe96, set to Grain Merge 45%.
11. New layer, white, set to Soft Light 40%.
12. Duplicate white layer, leave at Soft Light 40%.
13. Duplicate base, desaturate, move to become top layer, set to Soft Light 100%.
14. Duplicate desaturated layer, set to Grain Merge 45%.
15. Add this texture reve1-04.jpg from reve_lucide at lucide_icons, move to become bottom layer,
       leave at Normal 100%.
16. Add this texture fullmind_79_textures3_20.jpg from fullmind_79 at textures_r_us, move to become second
layer from bottom, flip horizontally, leave at Normal 100%, remove all color except the flowered corner.
17. Text was added to the top layer, Edwardian Script ITC Semi-Expanded, 27 pt, 8d6c3b. (I picked the color up with
the eyedropper tool from Bertie's vest.)
18. Duplicate the text layer to make it darker.
19. Duplicate the text layer again, change color to e6e69f, move underneath the original text layer, offset one pixel
up and one pixel to the left.
       a. Use Layer, Transform, Offset
       b. Enter -1 for both X and Y values. (If you enter 1 in both values, the text will offset 1 pixel down and 1 pixel to the right.)
       c. Blur the layer once (Filter, Blur, Blur).

Technique for outlining text taken from disdainful_soul at disdainfulicons.

Here are my layers when all is said and done.

Comments? Yes, please! :)

You're most welcome! I really like the way this one turned out; it was fun to play with all the options!

Oh, wow! It's lovely. Most J&W screencaps are really fuzzy with low contrast, so this is a great way to make the characters stand out. A really cool effect. Great job! Bookmarking for future reference (because my bookmarks are way more organised than my memories XD).

Yeah, the caps are just not that good. I pull mine off and just don't take the time to clean them all up. The ones I want for icons, I put through some kind of, er, process to make them bright and shiny.

It's amazing how a turquoise layer set to burn sharpens up a fuzzy picture! It's really odd how colors play together...why is turquoise the right color? I've tried other colors, but nothing works like turquoise. :)

And thanks for the kind words and the bookmarking! Yay! :)

These icons always looks so great! Where did you get the program for it?

Thank you so much! I use a program call The GIMP. I have info about it and a link to download it in my resources post.
