My First Tutorial!

I've gotten a lot of enjoyment recently from learning The GIMP and making some really lovely icons. The assistance received from others who've posted tutorials here on LJ and on the interwebs has been very much appreciated. In the spirit of paying forward, here is my first tut for The GIMP!

Go from this to JW1x02_Reflection.png

I started with 1x02jeeves513.jpg.
01. Crop the image as desired. I find it easiest to use a square crop (hold down the Shift key
while selecting); that way when I scale to a square pixel count, I'm sure to keep the aspect
ratio correct. I wanted to retain both Jeeves and Bertie in the mirror as well as Bertie looking into the mirror.
02. Scale to 100x100.
03. Sharpen the image to 40.
04. Duplicate base, Screen 100%
05. Duplicate base, Overlay 50%
06. New layer b1a5a5, Overlay 100%
07. Duplicate b1a5a5 layer, Overlay 100%
08. Duplicate base, move to top, desaturate, Soft Light 70%
09. Duplicate desaturated layer, Soft Light 60%
10. New layer, 000000, Soft Light 80%

As a last touch, I embellished the base layer with a tiny text brush from weapon_icons that I found at pstogimpbrushes

At the end, this is what my Layers dialog box looked like:

The icon on this post was made as above with some minor changes here and there.

Based on a tut by ladylostris.

I'd love to see your results!

I haven't used GIMP, but I notice you don't mention preserving the aspect ratio. Is it not necessary? In IrfanView, which I use, I have to either crop to an even size (such that the horizontal and vertical are the exact same number of pixels) or ask it to preserve the aspect ratio when shrinking, so that whichever side I designate (the one I think is longer) goes to 100 but the other edge is proportionally smaller. If I don't do one of those two things that the people in the picture can appear squashed or stretched.

Er, take out the word 'that' in the last sentence.

Good point! Most tuts I've seen don't mention the aspect ratio, but it's definitely important to keep in mind. I updated the post accordingly, using your suggestion to crop using a square. I think that makes it much easier.

Thanks a lot for the improvement suggestion!
